Junk Type was a dream project. “Kayleigh, here are over a thousand Instagram images of vintage lettering ephemera from the Recapturist. Make a them into a beautiful book.”

Starting with contact sheets covering every surface in my room, I lived with the images until I started to find repeating design elements: self-underlining caps, logos that formed to an outer shape, lightning bolts, animal mascots, and more became collage pages to work into the layout.

I wanted to create chapters distinguishing serif, sans serif, and scripts; but the editor wanted me to present a more spontaneous option. I envisioned the reader at a flea market finding these items themself and delighting in the pairings, just like I did!
